KCKPD Police Academy

The KCKPD-Michael Haen Police Academy is located on the campus of the Kansas City, Kansas Community College at College Parkway and State Ave. It is the primary training facility for training of new officer recruits as well as on-going professional education and training for sworn officers and recruitment events. Firearm training is conducted at a separate facility in northern Wyandotte County.

The 8,600 sq. ft facility opened in 2011 and bears the name of KCKPD Reserve Officer Michael Haen who was accidentally shot and killed in the line of duty on July 18, 1978. Haen was an instructor, baseball coach and one of the founders of the law enforcement program at KCKCC.

The KCKPD Police Academy is a nonresidential academy that operates during daytime hours, Monday through Friday. After completing Basic Recruit Training and certification as a police officer, graduates complete a 15-week FTO (Field Training Officer) program before being assigned to a patrol division. On average, the KCKPD Academy graduates two classes annually.
