The year 2020 has been a challenging one for our entire nation – from COVID-19 to protests and civil unrest. In response, the training, policies, practices, and overall culture of police departments nationwide have been called into question. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department believes that the community not only has the right to ask those questions, but to receive clear, honest answers. Some of the most pressing issues regarding police practices have been addressed through the #8CANTWAIT initiative. Below is a graphic which outlines our response to #8CANTWAIT.

Offense & Accident Reports
Copies of criminal offense reports and accident reports can be received from the Records Unit in the lobby of police headquarters. There is no charge for the first five pages of reports.
Driving Records
Driving records can be purchased from the Records Unit in the lobby of police headquarters. You must present your driver's license in person and pay a $6.00 fee.
Criminal History Report
Criminal history reports containing only conviction information can be purchased from the Records Unit in the lobby of police headquarters. You must present valid identification and pay a $10.00 fee.

For information about a towed vehicle, please call or visit the Auto Release desk in the lobby of police headquarters. Our agency utilizes three different tow services based on the location from where the vehicle was towed. Please ensure that you have the required documentation. Most tickets issued in Kansas City, Kansas can be paid at the Municipal Court Office on the second floor of City Hall so long as the ticket does not require a court appearance. Unpaid tickets can result in the issuance of an arrest warrant and/or driver's license suspension. If you have questions about a ticket or court date, please contact Municipal Court.

Do you have information about a crime? Do you recognize someone profiled in a crime news story? You can report a crime anonymously by phone or online through the Kansas City Crime Stoppers Program. You can remain anonymous and receive a cash reward for information leading to the arrest of wanted criminals.
Security guard applicants must appear in person at police headquarters in order to submit a permit application. The applicant must also provide a letter from a licensed security company attesting that the applicant is to be employed at that firm as a private security officer. Please review the instructions below before submitting an application.
City ordinance requires that all residential and business alarms systems be registered with the police department to minimize and manage false alarms. There is no fee for an alarm permit if it is applied for within 10 days of installation or conversion of the alarm system. A late fee of $25.00 will be charged if an alarm user does not obtain a permit within those 10 days.
Fingerprint services are offered through Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office in the Offender Registration Unit, located on the mezzanine level of the Wyandotte County Courthouse at 710 N. 7th St.
The Kansas Open Records Act applies to requests for bodyworn or in-vehicle camera recordings, release of which will be subject to KSA 45-221 and other exceptions.
If not otherwise available for release, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department will allow the following individuals to listen to a requested audio recording or to view a requested video recording within 20 days of making the request.
A person who is the subject of a recording
A parent or legal guardian of a person under 18 who is a subject of the recording
An attorney for a person described above
An heir at law, an executor or administrator of a decedent, when the decedent is the subject of a recording
*For the purposes of this policy, a “subject” of a recording shall be a person whose image or voice is in the recording. When disclosing the recording, only those portions of the recording that contain the image or voice of the person shall be disclosed.
Police Department personnel will be present at all times during the viewing and the requester shall not in any manner record or copy the video being viewed. All requests must be submitted in writing so please click on the “Kansas Open Records” link (via Next Request) below to make a request.
All requests for Body Worn Camera video through the Kansas Open Records Act may be requested in writing and by clicking the “Kansas Open Records” link (via Next Request) below. The following conditions will apply:
- If the video is available and subject to release a fee will be applied.
- If redaction is required, a redaction fee will be applied.
- All fees must be paid by the requester in advance.
- If a recording will not be released per KSA 45-221 or other exceptions, the requester will be notified and no fee will be collected.

The George Lee Dunn Animal Shelter provides humane care for animals impounded until they are returned or reclaimed by their owner or adopted by a new family.
