Hire an Off-Duty Officer

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department allows its officers to work events outside of their normal duty hours. Off-duty officers are available for hire to provide security and/or traffic control at an established hourly rate. The total sum due to each officer for the assignment is to be paid directly to each officer at the time of the event unless other prior arrangements have been made with the program coordinator. Off-duty work is voluntary and filled on a case-by-case basis.

Duties provided:

  • General security at private events, fundraisers or other functions
  • Law enforcement functions for persons or private property
  • Traffic or pedestrian control on private property

Important Requirements:

  • Per department policy, work must conducted in the city limits of Kansas City, Kansas.
  • Requests should be submitted a minimum of 5 working days prior to the event date.
  • Three-hour employment minimum.
  • For events where alcohol is served, the Unified Government Of Wyandotte County/KCK Municipal Codes requires the following ratio of officers to attendees:   

0-125: none

125-250: two officers

250+: two officers, plus, two additional officers for each 100 attendees

  • Contractors must provide 48-hour notification of cancellation. Cancellations within this period will be requested to pay the three-hour minimum.
  • The legal authority vested in a sworn law enforcement member working off-duty employment is limited to the enforcement of federal law, state statutes and municipal ordinances. Officers cannot use police authority to enforce a private employer’s policies and regulations.
  • Police officers will use standard issued duty equipment.
